Musim 2008/09 ini, Leeds United masih berkubang di kasta ketiga kompetisi sepakbola Liga Inggris. Akhir musim lalu, Leeds hampir promosi ke Championship Division namun kalah 1-0 dari Doncaster Rovers pada final play off di Wembley. Hal yang sama terjadi pada Leeds dua musim lalu, dimana Leeds hampir promosi ke Premiership, namun kalah 3-0 dari Watford pada final play off di Millenium Stadium Cardiff.
Leeds 2008/09 bermaterikan 80% pemain lama yang musim lalu “menguasai” League One. Sayang, pengurangan 15 poin pada awal musim membuat gelar juara dan runner-up (promosi otomatis) jatuh ke tangan Swansea City dan Nottingham Forest. Leeds pun harus puas menghuni peringkat 5 dan gagal di fase play-off.
Manajer Leeds asal Skotlandia, Gary McAllister, menargetkan musim ini Leeds menjuarai League One sekaligus promosi otomatis ke Championship Division. Kegagalan pada dua final play off terlalu berat untuk fans Leeds yang hampir selalu memenuhi stadion Elland Road yang berkapasitas 40 ribu, sekalipun bermain di kasta ke tiga alias League One.
Sebagai fans Leeds, aku masih terus mengikuti perkembangan Leeds, dan berharap dua musim ke depan Leeds mampu kembali ke habitat The Mighty Whites yang seharusnya, Premiership.
